BIOGRAPHY
Charles L. Chatmon
Charles L. Chatmon began writing at an early age. The
Los Angeles, California native remembers picking up a
pen and wrote what was on his mind. He started to
write short stories and poetry to pass the time. With
the help of interested teachers, Charles learned the
basic skills of creative writing which for him, would
be the beginning of a dream which he would accomplish
years later.
Writing articles in his high school newspaper
encouraged Charles to pursue his dream of seeing his
talent on print. His first published work of poetry
was in his sophomore year at Los Angeles City College
in the annual student literary collection. Besides
high school, Mr. Chatmon has written articles for
college and community newspapers such as The Wave and
L.A. Watts Times.
One of the accomplishments Charles is very proud of is
receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from
California State University, Los Angeles.
On occasion, Charles participates in events involving
the spoken word. He has graced audiences in functions
such as: The Los Angeles Black Business Expo, The
Black Writers Festival, The African American
Marketplace and the annual Black Writers on Tour. He
reads in book club and writer’s group meetings in the
city. Charles has conducted interviews on air and has
been a guest on XM Radio’s ‘Make It Plain’ and is a
frequent guest on AdviceRadio.com’s ‘Writers, Authors
and More’. Reading in front of large crowds is not new
to Charles; he has been reading his words since the
age of seventeen at a YMCA campfire.
In 2001, Charles published his debut book, The Depths
of My Soul with the assistance of his publisher, Dr.
Rosie Milligan and the staff of Milligan Books. He
recently released his second original collection of
poems in 2003 with The Voices of South Central. At
the moment, Charles is concentrating his energies on
other creative projects such as his short story and
novel ideas.
